The look of Doug was something I gave a lot of thought to. Given his role in the grander scheme of things (see previous page), it was obviously important for him to be recognisably British but, at the same time, I was keen to avoid hackneyed images of stiff-necked Bulldog Drummond types or effete aristocrats.
In the end, his 1930s matinee-idol looks may appear to have been inspired by Ronald Colman or Errol Flynn but, in fact, they came from an old photograph of a real WW2 fighter pilot. I stumbled across his picture quite by accident while searching for images of Spitfires in action. A small tribute to the courage of all those real pilots, I guess, but one of which I hope they would approve.
Oh, and the name "Doug"? Well, if you need me to answer that one, it's obviously been far too long since you last watched the movie "Reach for the Sky" starring Kenneth More!
